Family Christmas photos in Michigan


This year I hosted indoor Christmas photos in Metro Detroit Michigan. I found the perfect studio in Troy that had plenty of space, lighting and even accessories and backdrops. I purchased this year's backdrop from the Kate backdrop company. I chose to go with a more simplistic backdrops so the families could be the central focus of all the photos!

Family Christmas Outfits


When it comes to planning a photoshoot for family Christmas cards, outfits are one of the first things that come to mind! Outfits can make or break a Christmas card photo. When it comes to planning family photo outfits, keep these things in mind:

  • What does the background look like? Make sure your outfits don't clash! It's best to reach out to your photographer and ask for a photo of the setup so you know what to expect.
  • What is comfortable? Always dress kids in a comfortable outfit! You want them to be happy, and not too warm or too cold. Make sure their outfits fit properly as well, so you don't have to keep adjusting them.
  • What matches? It's always safe to to go with one or two of the same colors for every family members! I am personally not a fan of every member wearing the same outfit, but wearing the same color scheme is a must.

Christmas Family Photography Poses

When it comes to posing families, I always try to stick to natural poses. I always start off with formal poses first, and if we are able I begin some more active prompts. For indoor Christmas photos this year, we had 20 minutes to capture the family for their family Christmas cards. Because of the time restraint and setup, we were not able to get in as many fun & games photos as we usually do with outdoor sessions. Nonetheless, we were able to capture some natural expressions with the time we had!
